About

My name is Barry, and for as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated by computers. My journey began in my early teenage years, a truly exciting time when the world of home computing burst onto the scene. Our first foray into this new world was driven by the numerous computing magazines available at the time. My brother and I would spend hours meticulously typing out the BASIC computer programmes offered by the magazines, only to receive multiple errors. Some were from our own clumsy typing, while others were mistakes in the magazines themselves. We quickly and effectively learned the skill of debugging; the process of understanding why an error occurred and how to correct it.

While I never became a computer professional, those first steps instilled in me a lifelong fascination with computing and a set of practical skills that have helped me to understand various computing techniques. I don't claim to be an expert in any specific field. However, I have a lot of knowledge and hands-on experience and feel confident that I can offer a great deal of valuable information.

My wife and I now run a small Craft Shop, a long way from the heady world of computer science. But it's here, in our small business, that the recent rise in AI has assisted me in so many ways with both practical and creative tasks. Our customers are invariably everyday people, many of whom have embraced technology, but also many who are simply not interested or even a little worried about computers. It is these everyday people I am interested in helping to understand AI.

This website is dedicated to helping the everyday people of the UK embrace AI in their daily lives. You will note that I didn't say 'understand AI.' I don't understand how it works myself, not in the deeply complex technical sense. I have studied it and can talk about its workings, but I believe AI is now becoming so intricate that it's impossible for most people to truly grasp its inner mechanics. But just as you don't need to know how electricity works to turn on a light, you don't need to understand a neural network to get AI to help you in your day-to-day life. I will try to avoid discussing complex computing terms or blinding anyone with science. Instead, I will find practical uses that will positively impact everyday people and present them as simply as possible.

Who is this website for? I expect it to be of interest to anyone who is curious about AI but doesn't know where to start. I expect you'll either have or have access to a personal computer, a tablet, or a modern smartphone. I also hope you'll have an open mind to what AI can do for you. There are many who dismiss AI outright, and I hope that if you are in that category, you might open your mind to this amazing new technology and see the potential positives it might have for your life.
